Art Class - December 2nd!

Phew! I made it through another month of art classes! I have really enjoyed teaching these classes...the average age of my student is 2 and a half! I'm so thankful for the moms - they stay, they help out, they are so patient with me.

Here's a shout out to Rosemary and Lynne who helped so much the first month. And to Laura, for washing my daughter's hands when I'm preoccupied with another student. And to Emily for the idea in the first place. And all the encouragement. And for renting such a great space to me to make it possible.

Actually, I'm proud of myself for doing this class. Let me explain.

I mostly live in fear. I am afraid of a lot of things. Things I've never done before, but also things I've done a million times...just not lately.

So, I'd always wanted to do an art class or art group (like a playgroup) for kids, but never had the guts to actually make it happen. But the Lord and I have been talking about some of this stuff lately, and ever since my friend Heather died, I've been feeling that her legacy to me is a reminder to really live life and to just be who God made me to be. That's what I saw in her - and I want to be like that.

So when Emily encouraged me, and I really wanted to do it but was scared, and Rosemary was cool with helping, and thinking about Heather and how she probably would've told me how great she thought it was that I would try something like this, well, there you go.

Now, I won't say I don't still feel scared. Scared of the parents. (So silly, they're just PEOPLE.) Scared my projects will flop (some of them have, but I'm not sure anyone but me noticed). Scared that my kids will freak out during class (they haven't, they've been just great). Scared that enough people won't sign up next month (no big deal, I didn't have enough in October and it didn't kill me).

But it feels really good to try something new, to enjoy it, to meet new people, to see these kids create without any preconceived notion that 'they can't do it'. So thanks, friends, for all your help. Thanks Lord, for making me the way you did. Thanks Heather, for your legacy in my life.

It's a good day.

Fearbusters Anonymous

So I invented this one person support group back around 1999 or 2000. It was called Fearbusters Anonymous (which doesn't make a whole lot of sense when I think about it) but it was my way of being intentional about overcoming some fears in my life.

I tend to be a fearful person.

I remember making a list and then going down and trying to check something off each week. I HAD to do at least one thing a week.

Here are a few I remember:
Give blood.
Go out to eat alone.
Go to a play alone.
Ask a boy out.
Climb Mt. St. Helens

Okay, so obviously I was single then and scared of things that looking back, don't seem all that scary.

Anyway, it's time to revive Fearbusters!

Here are a few things I've done lately:

Take my cards into a card shop and ask them to consider carrying them.
Get a pedicure. (Okay, really not scary, but I'd not done it before therefore it IS scary.)
Start an art class for kids.
Ask for a free goodie at Starbucks.
Cook for other people on a monthly basis by joining a soup swap.

I think I'm just tired of letting fear be such a defining element in my life. It gets old. Do you ever feel like that? If I live inside of my fears, pretty soon my 'safe' area is going to be smaller and smaller. Pretty soon, I won't be leaving the house or talking to anyone! So, fear-busting is where it's at for me. It's a tangible reminder that the Lord walks with me. That I am an adult and can handle what life throws at me with His help.

Let me know if you want to join. I'll send you a membership card!

Great Calendar - Gift Idea

Do you love the look of old-fashioned clotheslines?
Do you want to show your support of eco-friendly living?

A friend of mine had a great idea for a calendar. Clotheslines! She's donating the proceeds to a non-profit scholarship program. You can get the craigslit info here - they're $10 plus $4 shipping.

Here's a shot from the front cover.

And if you analyze the calendar closely after you get it, you may recognize some of my laundry! Yes, my Albuquerque clothesline made it into the calendar!

TRIAMBLE - An Heirloom

I finally took a picture of my one and only pumpkin (triamble) !
Here it is, all 12 pounds of it.
Perfect for Halloween - they're so ghoulishy-green.

I got the original seeds from my friend, Novella, over at Ghost Town Farm.

I plan to plant these babies in the front yard next Spring. We hang out mostly in the back yard and the vines pretty much took over back there. They'll have more room in the front.

This is what my front yard will look like.

I noticed something great about this pumpkin variety: It didn't seem bothered by squash bugs. After my trying and emotional summer with the squash bug invasion last year, this is a good thing.

They're supposed to be great for eating - I'll let you know - I've got some roasting right now!

Currently in the Middle of...

1. Canning Salsa with homegrown tomatoes
2. Crushing eggshells for the chickens to eat
3. Roasting pumpkin (triamble) to eventually become part of my soup swap contribution
4. Entertaining littlest kidlet
5. Homeschooling oldest kidlet, subject: telling time
6. Getting kitchen/house back into husband-will-be-home-soon & look-at-all-the-stuff-I-did-I-really-don't-sit-on-my-butt-all-day mode.
7. Drying seeds to save for next spring from 3.

Luckily it is possible to 4 with 1. Hopefully I won't get any 2 in 1 or 3. If I underachieve in 5, at least eldest won't notice that dinner is late because of 1-5, so that could be a good thing. However, 6 is low on the totem pole on this point but really should be up around 1.
