a drawing a day

So I was running out of things to do and then I came up with this fabulous idea. [I hope you can hear the sarcasm as I'm laying it on pretty thick. I never run out of things to do.] Even as I type this, I am not-so-secretly thinking, "Where in the WORLD do I come up with these things?"

I HAVE been wanting to do this for quite a while, though. Let me explain. As an aspiring artist (and the emphasis is heavily on the aspiring - I don't say this in a disparaging way, it's more like a realistic self-assessment kind of way) I realize a need for more and then some more practice.

Okay, brace yourself. Disclaimer. WARNING. I'm going to mention sports.

One of our pastors says something like "a professional athlete puts in 10,000 hours to become an expert in their craft" [Here you can see a guy testing this concept to try and become a pro-golfer]. I guess it's something similar for an artist. Yes, natural ability. And yes, putting the time in.

[And that concludes the last sports illustration that I will probably ever use. In my life.]

Anyway, I didn't have the gumption to pursue art in college when I had more time than brains. I was scared. I was too worried about getting chemistry labs in and making sure I graduated on time. [Oh, the silly, silly things I was worried about.] I was more worried about doing something I was really good at (i.e. take biology and chemistry tests) than something I really loved but was not as confident in (draw and paint).

If I had, pursued art that is, I'm not saying I'd be famous - just that I would've put the required time in. Now I'll just have to make up for it in between diaper changes, correcting grammar, sweeping the floor, and teaching the littles how to read!

Obviously, since I didn't mean for my coffee maker to look like it was melting, you can see that I need the practice.

And, since this is a year of fear-busting, it's time to just draw. Every God-given Day.

I actually managed this for almost 6 weeks straight last summer.

I was pretty impressed.

The only other things I've ever done that consistently are 1) be married and 2) feed my children.

So - drawing every day. Here is my first installment. My first week. Done.
